My Dogs And Me

Snuggles

I am from Ms. I currently own 3 dogs Spot, Shortcake, and Snuggles. I currently training Snuggles.... or at least trying. I have a few problems letting them know I am the pack leader (I read an article about it after my dogs got older.) My passion is to become a veterinarian and own a no kill animal shelter. I got involved in dog training as I got older. I love my dogs very much and have kind of slacked on training my dogs, but I am wanting to get back to doing that. Spot is 9 years old, Shortcake is 5 years old, and Snuggles is 2 1/2 years old. I would like to train them more. Snuggles does not know to come when called so I am definitely wanting to teach him that. I would also like to teach them all some fun tricks. I already love this website.

WELCOME!!!
You want to get back into training your dogs more??
HA, HAVE YOU EVER FOUND THE RIGHT SPOT!!
:ROFLMAO: GLAD YOU ARE HERE!!

Your dog is adorable, feel free to post more photos of the other dogs, too! I like your goals very very much!!:)

My dog and i have never had the "who is pack leader" talk, nope. :ROFLMAO: I don't much buy "pack leader" stuff at all, nor do i buy everything i read. But, to each his own i guess.;)

I love that you are training dogs of all ages there!! YAY FOR YOU!!! Dogs of any age can learn tricks and cues!

Re: getting your dog to come when you call, that is sort of an ongoing thing, imo. Some tricks, you teach it, and dog has it forever.
But, for some dogs, "recall" has to be maintained, to be kept razor sharp. This is not what i think is a super easy thing for all dogs to master, but, it can be done! Sometimes, it seems this is easier for some dogs, than other dogs...this wasn't that hard for my dog to get idea, really.

Here are some threads on how to teach your dog to come when called:

everyone has their own way to teach recall, post #4 in this thread, is how i did it:

this thread has some good ideas on games to play to strengthen the dog returning to you:

GOOD LUCK, AND post any questions you have!!

what exactly is it,
exactly,
that your dogs are doing,
that lead you to believe the dogs "do not know you are pack leader"? I might have been misunderstanding you, sorry!!

tigerlily46514, Hi. Your dog is very cute!!:) The reason I think that they don't know I am the pack leader (it is mainly Snuggles) is because Snuggles will growl if you pick him up to take him away from something he wants but doesn't need. He never bites just kind of puts his his teeth on your hand letting you know he doesn't like it. But he has NEVER bite us. I just don't want him getting in the habit of growling at us. I am glad you like my goals.

Your problem is resource guarding, not "be the pack leader" that is not really a welcome term here LOL.

Resource guarding isn't hard to get rid of, but takes some patience. I recommend you read "Mine!" by Jean Donaldson.

My most recent rescue, Boo (I've had him 1.5 years now) was a severe resource guarder. It's solved now.
