they have meetup.com sites for all major US cities, and for some countries outside the US too. there are all sorts of categories under these sites, for example I found many dog-related groups for the one in my city. it's a way to meet like-minded people, who live in your area, through mutual interests and hobbies. Anyone can start a local meetup group through these sites, I think, so maybe if you don't see a local group that interests you, you can start a doggie play group in your local meetup.com site....
