Get The Dog To Hold Something

Ive started learning my dachshund to "pick up" things but he lets them go right away. How do I get him to hold it for just a few sec?

When I taught Shivon roll in a blanket, I teased her with the blanket so she could hold it longer. I don't know if that would work for Alf. You can try the "take it" and "hold it" commands.
