I Am So Sick Of Ppl.

so hubbie invited his family over - they live nearly 3hrs away.

somehow, the conversation never included the line "oh, by the way, we have a gert big hairy black dog".

they showed up and they refused to come in the house. didn't matter what i said or did, they refused to come in. they wanted to know where a hotel was (both of them are booked solid) or they were going back home. every time dandy so much as blinked, they'd be all flinching and eeking and totally dramatic.

in the end, the only thing i could do was lock dandy in my bedroom and take him out for five or six short walks (because naturally, as a "good hindu wife", i'm supposed to cater to these ppl).

there were so many of them, they took up all the beds plus a couple blow-ups. ganesh said "well, i guess you can sleep in my room tonight". and i looked at him and said "actually, i'm going to sleep in my room with dandy."

and do you know what they had the unmitigated gall to say as they were leaving? "well, you didn't have to leave him locked up - you could've let him out, you know".

after we got back from escorting them halfway back home, dandy clung to my side like wet rubber (literally: he plastered himself up against me every chance he could) and hubbie goes "what's *wrong* with him??" and i said "what the hell do you think? he doesn't understand why he's been punished for two days!" and he says "but they SAID you could let him out!"

"yes! AFTER they were already leaving!"

AAAAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

honestly, i need my own place.

Can so feel for you and Dandy!!!!!!!!!!! Fortunately I've not been placed in quite such a difficult situation as you were in, but if people don't want to come in my home because of my dogs, well there's always the great outdoors!!!!!!!!!!! Had a few 'wars' with people over this matter. They tend not to visit again, thank goodness!

I wouldn't be too upset if someone came to my house who doesn't like dogs and asked for them to be kept away. It isn't really any worse than if they had an allergy.
My brothers girlfriend is allergic to cats (we have four cats) so when they were here at christmas we weren't offended when they chose to stay the night elsewhere and when they visited we always tried to keep the cats away even if it meant shutting them out of the room and covered some of the furniture to stop the cat hair getting all over her when she sat down.

The only bit that would really annoy me would be the comment at the end (they should have thanked you for accomadating them and there need to keep the dog away) and that they stayed so long so Dandy had to be shut away so long, they should have stayed at a hotel if they were that strongly against being near dogs and just visited during the day or something.

I agree
I put my dogs up when my two little cousins come because they are terrified of big dogs. Its no big deal to put the dogs up if company aren't comfortable with them.

See i think if your comingover to my houseand cant stand dogs...dont come over. Period. It is the dogs house...you are visiting. Unless there is an alergy of course...that is uncontrolable.

I'm with you, only people excused are those with allergies.

I'm sorry but I can't agree. There are many reasons why someone might not like to be near dogs including allergies, fear, religious reasons etc and if I had such a person visit my house I would not expect them to have to give me the details of why they don't want to be near the dog so that I can decide if it is a good reason or not and I would also not ask them to leave or put up with it.
If they are only visiting for a short time (eg, an hour or so) then I don't have any problem removing the dog to make them more comfortable and it would probably be nicer for the dog than being around that person. I would expect most dogs would pick up on how the person is feeling and may start to feel stressed and could end up acting in an uncharacteristic way.

Although having to shut the dog away for three days is a bit much and I probably wouldn't be happy with that either and would advice them to sleep elsewhere if they felt that strongly about dogs,

We are in the opposite boat right now, hopefully not forever. Until I get Brody figured out, I am very reluctant to have anyone over, and we have friends who are asking to meet him. I have had to say "no" to visitors, and my 11 year old daughter had to have her birthday party away from the house because I was afraid of how it would affect the dog, or worse, what he might do to the visitors. As owners, we are responsible for managing our dog and keeping visitors to our home safe. That involves communicating clearly with our friends/family so that feelings don't get hurt. Even if I have a dog who loves people and I can trust with anyone, if the person is not comfortable with the dog in my home, I need to be the one to keep everyone safe and secure. It is not a person's fault they are afraid of dogs, any more than it is a dog's fault it is afraid of people. (Your husband is afraid of dogs, yet he didn't see the need to warn his family about Dandy? Hmm.)

Just because someone is afraid of dogs or doesn't like them, I am not about to tell them they are not welcomed in my home. My three nephews 9, 6, and 4 are scared of dogs, my niece(9 months will probably be scared too when she's older). If Chase comes near Ben (3) he hugs my leg crying, so yes I put the dogs up when they are over. I'm not about to tell my sister she isn't welcomed with her kids(who I adore) because they are scared of my dogs. I have put Missy and Chase up several times because company are not comfortable with them or because the dogs get overly excited when the kids start playing loudly.

If your mom, sibling, or best friend don't like or are scared of dogs are you going to tell them they aren't welcomed to your house. Will it really hurt for your dog to spend the day in your room with you taking them out to go potty and a walk? Sure the dog will be bored that day, but no harm done. Now I understand you not being happy having them stay a few nights that's just ridiculous. But to say that you don't welcome people who don't like dogs into your home.

Maybe for family for a short while Id put my dog in an other room...but other than that no. Deja behaves herself and if the people cant even deal with a dog laying on her bed and not bothering them then I find that a tad silly of them. If Deja where to be annoying then id crate her...but as long as she is being mannerly then she has her freedom.
