Funeral for bunny

Posted 07-14-2009 at 10:48 PM by bellapup
Today is a sad day.

I let Bella out into the backyard for just a few minutes while I got a phone call. It wasn't long before I spied out back and saw her gently nudging a small limp furry body. I couldn't see very well and at first I thought she maybe finally caught a bird, but no....it was a wild baby bunny that had the misfortune of slipping into my backyard.

It seemed that there were no puncture wounds, no blood anywhere. I've been told that it could have run feverishly from Bella and accidentally banged into the wall or something, breaking its neck...or that it simply had a little heart attack at seeing a dog come running at it full speed.

I couldn't really look at it, I was just sad. I know it's Bella's hunting instincts kicking in, and I'm glad she didn't eat any part of it...but still, it was a poor little baby bunny.

Fortunately, as much as she didn't want to, the 'Leave It' command worked and Bella reluctantly left the little body behind.
Too bad little animal warning signs don't work...I don't want any more presents in my backyard.

Aww, poor baby bunny. But yay for Bella! Great test for leave-it...lol. Zeke used to pluck birds from the trees....my crazy pogo-stick dog used to literally leap into the air when a bird flew out of our GIANT oak tree that's been there over 20 years. It's not a small tree....but Z could pluck birds from the air. It was insane. So at least Bella was looking for a bunny to hunt. And for the record, fortunately Z no longer hunts birds. o-o

Yeah...I've definitely got mixed feelings about it...somewhat proud of my girl. *L*

Wow, Zeke sounds like a hunting gymnast. *LOL* How did you get him to stop hunting birds? I'd like to curb Bella's appetite for lizards and bunnies...

To be honest, I can't even remember. It was sooo long ago....I think he was one-ish, just over adolescence..... Part of it he just grew out of, but I remember doing something with him. Lol. o-o;

What you might work on is just controlling her prey drive. A great way to start with this is to get her riled up with a tug rope and randomly tell her to drop it. Check out my post "Today's Training Accomplishments." It's described a little better there and Fickla posted the video that gave me the idea. It's a great game to play to work on control. I don't know if this would help or not, but you could also visit pet stores that have rabbits. Zeke has an unhealthy prey obsession with cats...that's the only way I can describe it. If I'm with him, he'll just lock his eyes on them. He's not aggressive, but he's like a working sheepdog waiting to be released to move the sheep....if that makes sense, lol! We're working on a better leave it so we can use that with the cats. I don't know what he'd do to a cat with me not around. I usually break his focus and take him further away from them. I use a Gentle Leader on him, so this is helpful. If she behaves this way with all small animals, then a GL would help a lot. But, depending on whether she has a really high prey drive or a low prey drive, you may not be able to have her PERFECT when not under your watchful eye.
