This is a very important question...
When you write a pretty official letter, to someone you don't know, what kind of greeting do you use?
Becouse I don't think Hi, or Hello would be good...
I thought about Dear X..., but what if I don't know the name?
I know this has nothing to do with dogs...

If you don't know the person to whom you are writing, the format of your letter should be:

    Dear Sir or Madam,

    Content of letter.......

    Yours Faithfully

There's a difference between British and North American English. If you are sending your letter to someone in the U.K. then CollieMan has given you a good example.
